A hiking goat I am not, even on flat city streets.
I have a story to tell. Today I thought I would save money and walk to the Orchard Park mall here in Kelowna, where I’m visiting. I did not want to pay for a cab so walk it is. Smart me, not being familiar with the area I thought I would find myself a shortcut. I went out the back of the motel, deciding to walk away from the known busy road that would lead me to the mall. Surely I will walk the side road and it will be more peaceful I’m thinking.
Off I go, walking north on the side street, following the road, attempting to stay perpendicular to the road; should work right? Walked probably around 5 blocks and thought perhaps I should head back up to the main road now. Just happens that the road I am on goes in a loop with no exit to get through to the main road where I need to be. So, I am left with no option but to follow the loop back around. Well, jolly good, I am now back at the motel pretty well. I know I can get to the main road there, so all the way back to the start point.
There is this footbridge you can go over to cross Harvey and this was my aim, yes, I will not have to cross in the traffic, I liked that idea better. Well I got to the footbridge and I noticed something. The ramp to walk up comes from the north; so I will have to walk all the way to the end of it and walk all the way back in the direction I came to use this footbridge. I see on the other side there is a way to exit on either end of the footbridge on the other side; well that’s a bonus. But, hell if I feel like going backwards after all this walking; plodding on.
There were few other people walking, only a couple here and there. But, it seems we all follow the same rule, don’t even look at the other person as you walk by them. Okay, I will follow these rules and mind my own p’s and q’s; eyes straight forward and don’t look at them whatever you do.
I see a few people deciding to take a short cut as there are not that many light crossing on Harvey, since it is a highway. You’ve got at least six lanes of traffic, three going either way. But, bonus, there is this divider meridian; if you can dodge the three lanes of traffic and stand on the meridian until the other opposing lanes have a break in traffic, here is your shortcut. I watched others do this; they stood in the middle for at least 2 minutes to wait for a break to run across on. I thought, well perhaps I shall not attempt this at this point in time.
